China's heavyweight UAV designed as a mothership for swarms of small aerial drones has flown for the first time on Thursday 11 December 2025. According to the AVIC, the Jiutian (literally 9th heaven) flew in the Pucheng County in China’s central Shaanxi Province. The mothership drone first appeared at the Zhuhai Airshow 2024 as a mock-up, where it was described as a 'beehive mission module', a reference to its drone swarm deployment capability.
For military purposes, drone swarms have a number of inherent benefits, including the ability to fan out across a broad area to carry out various missions depending on how they are configured, including ISR, electronic warfare, and strike. Additionally, Jiutian has been displayed earlier with the PL-12 long-range air-to-air missile, land attack cruise missiles and bombs. This hints at a general-purpose combat capability including air-to-air combat.
Jiutian is some 16 meters long and has a wingspan of around 25 meters. In addition to its maximum takeoff weight, it has a maximum payload capacity of nearly 6,000 kilograms, a ferry range of approximately 7,000 kilometers, and can stay aloft for up to 12 hours. The drone’s maximum operational ceiling is 15,000 meters, and it can fly at speeds up to 378 knots.
