I've tried to use Saron (Mac) version to convert DSD to FLAC. The default value for the DB gain is 6DB.
Then, I tried to set to 0. I really feel that the sound volume seem under the orignal volume.
Actually, what is the DB gain setting do you use?

depends on the album, i used replaygain to get the recommended gain + 6dB DSD->PCM offset.
I am now trying to use foobar Dynamic range too. will update the results shortly.

This is a short guide meant to provide a way to replicate the process I’m currently using to generate the PCM .flac files from the ISOs extracted with SACD-ripper.
Please be aware that there are much easier methods around, especially using the foobar2000 in combination with the SACD Decoder component, which can perform direct conversion as well as direct playback of the ISO files. Moreover, there is nothing “state-of-the-art” about the conversion method described in the following section; it just satisfies the following three main goals:
- Convert the DSD to PCM with the uttermost possible quality @ 24-bit/88.2kHz
- Avoid any clipping in the resulting PCM files
- Replicate as close as possible the original levels of the SACD.
The following software is assumed to have been successfully installed in your computer:
- The fully unzipped toolkit
- Weiss Saracon (01.61-27 or later)
- Foobar2000
- Foobar Dynamic Range Plugin (You need to copy the extracted content into the “Component” folder located in the installation directory of Foobar2000).
The following is the conversion procedure:
1) Copy the ISO file into the toolkit root directory (the one containing all the batches).
2) Extract the Stereo/Mch DSDIFF files using the batch files “Extract*” according to the type of encoding used by the SACD. As per scarletbook specs, all Multichannel mixes are DST encoded.
3) Once the .dff file have all been extracted, open the newly created subdirectory (usually named after the SACD title).
4) Start Saracon
5) In Saracon, select “DSD to PCM” under “Configuration” and press “Edit”
6) Drag the .dff files you want to convert and use the following parameters under “PCM Output”:
Format: Microsoft Wave Ex (wav)
Number Format: 24 bit fixed point
Dither: TPDF
Sample Rate: 88.2kHz
Gain dB: 0
Batch Mode: Smart Interleave
7) Press Ok and then “Convert”
8) Once the conversion is completed, open the “src” subdirectory.
9) Open foobar2000 and drag&drop the .wav files in the “src” directory in it.
10) Make sure that all the .wav files are selected in foobar, right click and select “Dynamic Range Meter”. Use the lowest *absolute* number as reference value
11) In Saracon, redo steps 5), 6) and 7), but this time by applying the gain suggested in 10) minus one hundreth (i.e. if the values suggested was 4.32dB, use +4.31dB). If the reference value in 10) is over 6dB, insert +6dB. Let Saracon overwrite the older .wav files if prompted to do so.
12) Once the second Saracon conversion is completed, move the .wav files to the root of the toolkit.
13) Double click on the “Compress and Trim” batch file.
14) The compressed .flac files can now be found in the “Compressed” subfolder.
At this point I use Mp3Tag to get the file info from freedb and rename the files, and foobar to complete the tag editing up to the “properly tagged” standard.
The naming standard I use in MP3Tag is either “$num(%track%,2) – %title%” for normal albums and “$num(%track%,2) – %artist% – %title%” for compilations. For “properly tagged” I mean that the following attributes are assigned: ARTIST, TITLE, ALBUM, DATE, TRACKNUMBER, TOTALTRACKS, GENRE, ALBUM ARTIST, ALBUMARTIST, plus COMPOSER and PERFORMER for classical albums.
The directory naming convention I use is fairly simple: Artist – Album (Year) [SACD] (Attribute). For instance, the following is an example of how I name the folders based on the same album:
Bob Dylan – Blood On The Tracks (1975) [SACD] (2003 Remaster PCM Mch)
Bob Dylan – Blood On The Tracks (1975) [SACD] (2003 Remaster PCM Stereo)
Bob Dylan – Blood On The Tracks (1975) [SACD] (2003 Remaster ISO)
The content of the folder is discretionary. I would recommend to include both ffp and md5 checksums (Traders Little Helper works wonder), a M3U playlist file, a small cover image (named ether thumb.jpg or folder.jpg), and some information about the release as txt file (I use nfobuilder). I also include a gain.txt file for reference, together with the original SACD extraction log.
