Alain Jaume Lirac Clos de Sixte 2005
Reviews
92 points, Wine Enthusiasts
"Dense and richly fruited on the nose, but not jammy or simple—there’s a healthy dose of spice to add nuance to the plum and black-cherry flavors. Ripe tannins impart a creamy texture to the midpalate, while the finish is long and fresh. Nuanced yet powerful; supple yet structured. This is top-notch stuff from a vintage that’s looking extremely promising."
- Joe Czerwinski (Nov 2006)
90+ points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"More tannin, minerality, and structure are found in both cuvees of the Lirac Clos de Sixte. I actually think the 2006 is the more charming of the two wines, and the 2005 seems to have taken on more tannin and closed down since I had it last year. Both are very good examples, with structuralists preferring the 2005, and hedonists preferring the 2006. Take your pick."
- Robert Parker (Aug 2008)
About the wine
If you love wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, you will sure to fall in love with wines from Lirac. Located just right across the river from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Lirac is much less well known internationally but actually has a long wine producing history. Lirac has churned out wines since pre-Roman times and these wines were once the favorites of kings and the Papel community. Most of the wines are comprised of very similar grapes as wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, mainly Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
Lirac is nowadays well known for its undervalued wines that are in many ways, comparable to the wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In some cases, you may not even notice the differences between the wines from the two regions and you may also even prefer the Lirac wines more. Such is the case for today’s Alain Jaume Lirac Clos de Sixte 2005.
